Obituary of Michael Scott Mayfield

Michael Scott Mayfield, 54, of Girard, IL, passed away Monday evening, March 8, 2021 at Heritage Health Care in Springfield, IL. Michael was born on October 15, 1966 to James and Wanda (Jenkins) Mayfield in Springfield, IL. He graduated from Girard High School with the class of 1985 and soon after enlisted in the United States Navy. Michael married Shirley Burcks on August 20, 1988 in LaMesa, CA and later married Miranda Prater in San Diego, CA. Both marriages ended in divorce. Michael retired from the United States Navy after 20 years of service to his county. This included active duty during the Gulf War. He later worked at a VA hospital in Kentucky. His hobbies included deep sea fishing and metal detecting. Michael is survived by his parents, James and Wanda Mayfield of Girard, IL; daughter, Alicia (Quentin Coleman) Mayfield of Virden, IL; son, Zachary Mayfield of KY; step daughter, Chasity (Jordan) Prater-Davis of KY; step son, Austin (Stephanie) Prater of WA; four step grandchildren; two sisters, Lisa (Darrin) Miller of Nilwood, IL, Jenny (Chris) Van Deventer of Springfield, IL; one niece, Hannah Miller of Nilwood, IL, and two nephews, Justin Miller of Nilwood, IL and Fletcher Van Deventer of Springfield, IL. Michael was preceded in death by a brother, James Randall Mayfield. Private services will be conducted on Monday, March 15, 2021 at Camp Butler National Cemetery, Springfield, IL with Rev. Ron Schaff officiating. Family and friends are invited to a luncheon following those services at 1:00 pm at the Nilwood Baptist Church, Nilwood, IL. Memorials are suggested to the Parkinson's Foundation.
