Stella Coffey
Stella Coffey, formerly of Sparta, Illinois, passed away February 3, 2013, at Garden Villa in Bloomington, Indiana. She is survived by her two daughters, Glenda Murray (Patrick) of Bloomington, Indiana, and Betty Coffey of Owaneco, Illinois.
Stella Anna Behme was born January 15, 1924, to Henry Christian Behme and Clara May Rhodes Behme near Carlinville, Illinois. She graduated from Carlinville Community High School in1942 and attended St. Louis Business College in St. Louis. She worked for the Navy Department in St. Louis for three and a half years during and immediately after World War II.
Stella married Glenn I. Coffey June 22, 1946, in Carlinville. They lived in Altamont and Effingham before moving to Sparta in December 1950. Stella and Glenn had two daughters, Glenda and Betty. Stella was active in the community as a 4-H leader for a dozen years. She was a member of the Sparta Community Hospital Auxiliary for nearly 30 years as a volunteer in the gift shop. She was a member of the Sparta First United Methodist Church since 1951. Stella was a homemaker and gardener. She canned produce and made jams and jellies for many years. She loved to crochet and sew. She and Glenn regularly took the girls on family vacations and continued to travel once Glenda and Betty were grown.
She is survived by her daughters, Glenda Murray and Betty Coffey; by three sisters, Esther Fagerburg of New Britain, Connecticut, Irene Peacock of Branson, Missouri, and Verna Knudson (Richard) of Carlinville; by three brothers, Floyd Behme (Judy) of Nilwood, Illinois; Erwin Behme (Barbara), and Carl Behme (Charlene), all of Carlinville; and by many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; three sisters, Myrtle Karrick, Iva Loveless, and Lela Robinson; and one brother, Henry Behme. Funeral Information
Visitation will be held on Friday, February 8, 2013 from 9:30 to 11:00 am at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home, Carlinville with funeral services at 11:00 am at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Mayfield Cemetery in Carlinville. Donations Information
