Obituary of Olyta M. Hazelwood

Mrs. Olyta M. Hazelwood 83, of rural Girard died Friday morning, January 11, 2013 at Carlinville Rehab Center. She was born May 2, 1929 in rural Palmyra, IL to Robert Lee and Mabel (Pratt) Quarton. She married Carl D. Hazelwood December 26, 1948 at her parents' South Otter Township home. In addition to her husband she was preceded in death by her brother Donald Quarton, sister Laverl Hilyard, her daughter-in-law Melinda (Marvin) Hazelwood and her son-in-law Daniel (Linda) Figgins. She is survived by three sons, Marvin L. (Lori) of Springfield, Ronald L. (Cindy) of Nilwood and Richard W. (Gail) of Girard; four daughters, Dr. Linda Figgins of Elgin, Sandra (Mike) Barnard of Girard, Carla Husted of Girard, Marlene (Mel) Chasteen of Ewa Beach, Hawaii; 22 grandchildren, 38 great grandchildren, three sisters Geneva Frankford (Jim) of Hettick, Ida Mae Leach and Lucille (Bill) Harding of Carlinville, a brother Robert K. (Valerie) of Palmyra and many nieces and nephews. Olyta was Valedictorian of the 1945 graduating class of Carlinville High School, attended Blackburn College and taught grades 1 - 8 at the Hazel Green School. She was a homemaker and an upholsterer. She enjoyed spending time with family, quilting and gardening. Olyta was a long time member of Nilwood Baptist Church where she was active in the Women's Missionary Union leading children, youth and adult women in missions and a Sunday School teacher for all ages. She was active in the Macoupin Baptist Association and enjoyed many mission trips. Funeral Information Visitation will be Thursday, January 17 from 4-7 p.m. at the First Christian Church (700 W. Center) of Girard and Friday January 18, 9-10 a.m. with the funeral at 10:00 a.m. at the church. Burial following at the Girard Cemetery. Donations Information Memorial contributions may be made to the Nilwood Baptist Church or the Christian Activity Center in lieu of flowers.
