Leonard W. "Bill" Travers
79, of Carlinville, passed away Thursday, August 11, 2011 at Carlinville Rehab Center.
Bill was born Sunday, September 13, 1931 in Shipman, IL, the son of Everett and Clarice (Lynch) Travers. He married Gloria M. (Chism) Travers in Carlinville, on December 23, 1951.
Bill graduated from Shipman High School in 1949. He began his working career at Owens of Illinois Glass Company in Alton, IL. Bill served two years in the Army during the Korean War. Bill's test scores were so good, the Army kept him in the states to teach Radio and Teletype classes to the recruits. After the war Bill returned to Owens until 1983 at which time he became a woodworker at Hamps Wood Shop in Shipman. Bill retired in 1991. He served 14 years as an alderman for the Village of Shipman. Bill was a devoted husband and father and enjoyed spending time with his family.
Bill is survived by his wife, Gloria of Carlinville; sons, Len Travers (Barbara) of Fieldon, IL and Bill Travers of Jerseyville, IL; daughters, Jean Ann Goodman (Ron) and Becky Slightom (Eric) both of Carlinville; seven grandchildren, Nathan Travers, Timothy Travers, Nicholas Travers, Ryan Goodman, Jason Goodman, Kendall Slightom and Katlynn Slightom; three great grandchildren, Mitchell Travers, and Gwendolyn and Callie Goodman; sisters, Lois Cameron of Shipman, Helen Cameron of Shipman, and Geri Wright of California, as well as, several nieces and nephews.
Bill was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Elsie Cameron. Funeral Information
Visitation will be held from 4:00 to 7:00 P.M., Monday, August 15 at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home in Carlinville.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 A.M., Tuesday, August 16 at Davis-Anderson Funeral Home with Rev. Dave Collins officiating.
Burial will be in Mayfield Memorial Park Cemetery in Carlinville with military rites performed by Guy Baird American Legion Post #554. Donations Information
