Obituary of Susy Woods

Suzanne "Susy" Woods, 75, of Springfield, IL, passed away Friday, December 8, 2023, at her home. Susy was born June 11, 1948, in Salem, IL, a daughter of Laverne and Maxine McCastle Kauling. She graduated from Ursuline Academy with the class of 1966. She received her Bachelors and Masters Degrees from University of Illinois, Springfield, and a Doctorate from Walden University. She married David Dean Woods, on September 4, 1976. Susy worked as a Public Policy and Education Liaison with Illinois Assistive Technology in Springfield. She had retired from the IL Dept of Revenue as a computer operator. She had previously worked as a Director of Disability Services at U of I, Springfield, where she was also an adjunct professor. She was a champion and advocate for children throughout the state of Illinois. With her work for the advocacy of individuals with special needs, she was involved with many state groups. She was involved with IMPACT CIL, NAMI, IATC, ISAC, Arc of Illinois, UCP, and Partners in Policy Making. Susy was preceded in death by her parents, Laverne and Maxine Kauling, her beloved grandmother Belle McCastle, and great-nephew, Elijah Kauling. A Celebration of Life will be January 27, 2024, 1-4 pm at Erin’s Pavilion, 4965 S. 2nd St., Springfield, IL. Susy is survived by her husband, David Woods of Springfield, IL, daughter, Rachael (Rob) Macropoulos of Alton, IL, son, Adam (Leslie) Woods of Springfield IL, sister, Diane (Mark) Steinhauser of Frankfort, IL, sister, Tia (John) Schoen of Springfield, IL, several nieces and nephews, as well as the loves of her life, her grandchildren: Isabella (Alex) Schmidt, Sofia Macropoulos, Cecelia Macropoulos, and Hudson Macropoulos, great-granddaughter, Athena Burnom.
